Revit 2026 brings the biggest graphics upgrade in years. Here's how to get it installed and activated on Windows — plus what's new and how to avoid the classic two-part installer mistakes.
System requirements
| Component | Guidance |
|---|---|
| OS | Windows 10 (v1809+) or Windows 11, 64-bit |
| RAM | 16 GB minimum · 32 GB typical · 64 GB for large multi-discipline projects |
| GPU | DirectX 11, 4 GB VRAM baseline — 8 GB+ recommended for the new Accelerated Graphics |
| Disk | 30 GB for installation on SSD + ~100 GB working space for project files |
More than any earlier release, Revit 2026 rewards a modern GPU — the new GPU-accelerated viewport (Tech Preview) uses it heavily.
Step 1 — Download
- Sign in at manage.autodesk.com → All Products and Services → Revit → Downloads → version 2026, Windows 64-bit.
- The download arrives as a two-part package. Download both files, keep them in the same folder with their original names, and never extract part 2 manually.
Step 2 — Install
- Run the part-1 .exe as administrator; it extracts both parts to a temporary folder.
- Accept the terms, confirm the install path, and start the installation — expect 20–40 minutes on an SSD.
- The extraction and content-library phases can look frozen; they aren't. Let them finish, then restart Windows.
Step 3 — Activate
- Subscription (named user): launch Revit 2026 and sign in with the Autodesk account the subscription is assigned to.
- Product key: for perpetual/retail licences, choose Enter a serial number and input the serial + product key from your purchase.
- Trial: 30-day evaluation via an Autodesk account, upgradeable in place.
What's new in Revit 2026
- GPU-accelerated graphics (Tech Preview) — dramatically smoother orbit/pan/zoom in big models.
- Tabbed Project Browser — redesigned navigation for large projects.
- Wall by Room / Wall by Segment — faster wall creation workflows.
- Better topography modelling and tighter Autodesk Construction Cloud integration.
Troubleshooting
"Installation failed" right at the start
Usually the part-2 file is missing, renamed or half-downloaded. Re-download it, keep both parts together, re-run part 1.
Stuck at extraction / content install
Wait it out (up to 30 minutes) — confirm activity in Task Manager. Free at least 30 GB and disable third-party antivirus for the install.
Licence validation error
Sign in with the exact account the subscription is assigned to — verify under Users at manage.autodesk.com. Corporate firewalls blocking *.autodesk.com also cause this.
Add-ins from older Revit not working
Add-ins are version-specific — get 2026 builds from each vendor before migrating production work.
