KB5083631 is Microsoft's optional, non-security preview update released on 30 April 2026. Preview updates let you try next month's features early — you have to install them manually, and everything in them reaches everyone in the following Patch Tuesday.

- Not offered to 23H2 or older versions.
What's new
- Xbox Mode — a full-screen, console-style gaming interface. Open it from the Xbox app, Game Bar, or Win+F11.
- File Explorer — opens more archive formats (uu, cpio, xar, .nupkg), remembers your view/sort preferences properly, fixes the dark-mode white flash, and terminates Explorer processes more cleanly.
- Input — haptic feedback on supported touchpads/pens, a less intrusive redesigned voice typing UI, Arabic 101 Legacy keyboard layout, better emoji panel navigation.
- Multitasking — "Drag Tray" becomes Drop Tray with a smaller peek view; its settings move to System → Multitasking.
- AI & enterprise — taskbar icons can show live progress for AI agent tasks; Enterprise State Roaming manageable via Windows Backup policies; broader Group Policy app-removal control.
How to install
- Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates.
- KB5083631 appears under Optional updates available — click Download & install.
- Restart when prompted. Verify with
winver— the build should end in .8328.

⚠ Secure Boot certificate warning
Microsoft flags an important deadline alongside this update: older Secure Boot certificates expire in June 2026. PCs that haven't received the updated certificates could face boot issues after expiry. Keep Windows Update current on every machine — the certificate refresh ships automatically to updated systems.
How to uninstall if something breaks
- Settings → Windows Update → Update history → Uninstall updates.
- Select KB5083631 → Uninstall → restart.
As an optional preview it removes cleanly; your apps and files aren't affected.
