Windows 11 version 26H1 (released 10 February 2026, "Bromine" codebase) is different from a normal spring update: it's a hardware-platform release built for next-generation chips — not a feature update your current PC downloads.
What 26H1 actually is
26H1 exists to support silicon that older Windows builds can't drive properly. It brings deep platform work: better ARM performance, AI acceleration support, improved power efficiency, and compatibility for new device classes.

It ships pre-installed on new devices only.
Can you upgrade an existing PC?
No — and Microsoft says don't try. 26H1 is not offered through Windows Update and can't be installed as an in-place upgrade on existing machines. Manual ISO installs circulate online, but they're unsupported and a bad idea on production hardware. Existing PCs stay on 24H2/25H2 and get their next feature update in the normal cycle.
The unusual lifecycle — know this before buying
- Devices shipping with 26H1 skip 26H2 — their next feature update lands in 2027.
- No hotpatch support on 26H1.
- Security support ends 14 March 2028 (Home/Pro) or 13 March 2029 (Enterprise/Education).
What this means for you
- Buying a Snapdragon X2 laptop? It arrives on 26H1 — fully supported, nothing to do.
